Disciplines
Mountain biking – the mountain biking will take place on forestry roads, gravel roads and farm land. There’s not much flat land around Whangamatā so be prepared for some steep hills, up and down!
Trekking – the trekking will be a mixture of trails, streams, native bush and forestry.
Navigation – a key part of the race is navigating to the checkpoints using map and compass. No GPS allowed. Maps are provided and are generally 1:25000 topographical style maps. The 6hr race will be beginner – intermediate level with some optional checkpoints being trickier to navigate to.
Mystery activities – these will be revealed on the day. Previous mystery activities have included suduko, MTB seesaw, mud run, paint ball shooting, scrabble and quoits!
Difficulty
3hr Race
The 3hr event is designed for families and beginners to Adventure Racing. If you’re keen to try an adventure race but unsure if you could do it then this is the race for you. It’s also a great race for parents to do with their children and typically over half the field in the 3hr are families.
The use of optional checkpoints makes the race achievable for a variety of ability levels.
To complete the 3hr event you will need to be able to jog/walk approx. 5km off road, and mountain bike approx. 10km on forestry roads, farmland or singletrack (distances will be longer if getting optional checkpoints).
The race is set so that everyone needs to be back within the 3 hours.
6hr Race
The 6hr event is designed so the everyday athlete can complete the course (provided you done some training & navigation practice!). The navigation in this event will be based around tracks, roads and rivers making it achievable for those new to navigation.
The use of optional checkpoints means that the 6hr event will still be a challenge for intermediate level competitors who have some experience in adventure racing.
To complete the 6hr event you will need to be able to jog/walk approx. 10km off road, and mountain bike approx. 25km on forestry roads, farmland or singletrack (distances will be longer if getting optional checkpoints).
The race is set so that everyone needs to be back within the 6 hours

Prizes
Thanks to our generous sponsors we will have a fantastic array of spot prizes that everyone will go into the draw to win.
Support Crew
No support crews are required.
The race is unsupported. That means support crews are not allowed. You have to do all your transitions yourself. This creates an even playing field and means you don’t have to rope in support crew. Friends and family are of course welcome to come to cheer you on and take photos. There will be plenty of spots along to course to view the race.
The races will start and finish in the same place so you don’t have to sort any transport. There may require some gear drops the morning of the race.
