1km Kids Race – 5km Endurance Race – 10km Endurance Race – Surf Race
You can enter just one event or if you’re up for a challenge then enter the surf and race and one of the endurance races too. The endurance races are open to SUP, kayak and waka ama (W1, W2 only). The surf race is SUP only.
The Otahu Cup will be contested over the 10km Endurance and the Surf Race. The man and woman with the highest combined points in these two events will be awarded the Otahu Cup. The points are awarded as follows. First place gets 100pts. Everyone else’s points are scaled depending on how close they are to the winning time. For example if the winning time was 50mins and second place was 49mins then second would get 98pts (49/50 x 100). This system gives and even weighting to both events and makes every second count in both races!
There will a BBQ and event prizegiving in the evening where we will give out spot prizes, award the Otahu Cup and prizes for the winners & placegetters in each individual event.
1km Kids Race
The Kids Race will be a 1km triangular course on the Otahu Estuary. The race will start and finish at the Estuary boat ramp. This stretch of water is calm, sheltered and great for beginners to paddle on.
The 5km course is a loop around the Otahu Estuary and River. The race will start and finish at the Estuary boat ramp, going upstream first, then turning around a buoy and racing downstream to the Estuary mouth and back to the finish at the boat ramp. The course is very scenic and passes through beautiful native bush and farmland.
The 5km course is entirely on the sheltered river and estuary (no open ocean) making it suitable for beginner – intermediate level paddlers. The race is right on high tide so the current will be negligible.
The 10km course is subject to change depending on conditions. If swell and wind are favorable then may go straight out to the ocean and paddle around the Whangamata Islands – Hauturu and Whenuakura.
The 10km course is a loop around the Otahu Estuary and River as well as a stretch of the coastline. The race will start and finish at the Estuary boat ramp, going upstream first, then turning around a buoy and racing downstream out of the Estuary mouth and along the coast. Competitors will then turn around at Waikaukau point and race back into the Estuary to the finish at the boat ramp. This a great course with all types of paddling, estuary, river and open ocean.
The surf race is a multi-lap race in and out of the surf. The course will be M shaped with 2 buoys at the back of the surf break and 1 in the middle. The course will be approx. 1km and you will race 3 laps.
The course will be setup on the main Whangamata Beach north of the surf club. Exact setup will depend on the conditions on the day.
